Under The Spotlight: 22nd Jan

Updated: Jan 22, 2022

This week we have a new feature as we look at one race from the UK and cast our eye over it for you in more detail

And this weeks featured race is:

2.35pm at Haydock

Peter Marsh Handicap Chase

Grade 2 Limited Handicap

We have a good looking Grade 2 here over 3m1 and heading the market is the very much in-form pairing of Venetia Williams and jockey Charlie Deutsch. Williams has a pretty good record with the stayers and I really like Deutsch as a jockey, always seems to stay calm and run his race how he wants. And that could prove key here as Royale Pagaille heads the market and ran very well here in the betfair chase finishing behind A Plus Tard in a grade 1 affair.

He looks a worth favourite here but there are some challengers, Empire Steel has the champ Brian Hughes onboard and has certainly got his supporters. He looks potentially well handicapped despite a fall last time out at Wetherby when looking the likely winner and was 2nd behind the Stricklyadancer here on his season reappearance.

Remastered was a selection of mine a few weeks ago at a bigger price when falling in the Ladbrokes trophy but he followed that up with a solid 2nd over C&D here so he has to be respected and looks more than capable of taking one of these bigger races at some point

Sam Brown has been nibbled at a bit and the yard is in decent form of late so he has a shout here. He looks on a good mark and has won a Grade 2 here back in 2020 although his form has tailed off since. At 15/2 though he looks a decent each way prospect as does Lord Du Mesnil. He looks an out an out stayer so could well run on for a place although I can't see him challenging the market leaders

It's hard to make a case for Lake View Lad who's best days look behind him although he's more than capable of putting in a big run and Alnadam may have a bit to prove but can't be completely discounted. Kalooki may have more to offer but is a bit of an unknown, again I wouldn't completely rule him out and he could be a dark horse if taking to this. Fortescue and the outsider Sam's Adventure look to have a lot to find so are best probably watched in this one but it looks like it should be a great race

How the betting looks

The Verdict

A tough one to call but I'm going to side with Empire Steel for the win and Kalooki as an each way play with the extra places on offer at William Hill
