Royal Ascot Preview: 18th Jun

For Royal Ascot we have been bringing you the best of our daily picks from our growing list of experts on a fantastic week of top class flat action.

So up for the Saturday selections we have our own #OddsKnows who takes a look at the best of all the action here for you on The Cheeky Punts as we look to smash the bookies and find those winners to end this exciting week for race fans.

Here's my race by race guide for you to see us through the day;

2.30pm

The opener is the Chesham over 7f and we've a pretty hot favourite here in Aidan O'Briens Alfred Munnings. With little to go off for this 2YO affair, the AO'B colt has obvious claims from a powerful yard and being out of a top sire in Dubawi. He won well on his debut at Leopardstown and could well be the pick of these but at around even money I'd be a little reluctant to go all in at that price.

Skybet are offering money back for 2nd, 3rd or 4th so it may be worth taking a bit more of punt on this one. Faisal Road won at Yarmouth in a race that has produced 2 subsequent winners and could go well for John and Thady Gosden and Legend of Xanadu is the most experienced in the field and has top jock Will Buick onboard.

The value bet for me though is Crypto Force who changed hands for a whopping £900k this week and he beat a smart type at the Curragh is his only run. The talented Rossa Ryan takes the mount and at around 8/1 he looks good value to take on the short fav

3.05pm

The Jersey Stakes G3 is up next with another hot looking race for this Group 3 contest and there are a number here with live chances. The Gosdens have Audience, in the Cheveley Park colours, and Samburu for the Judmonte team with Frankie Dettori onboard and both come in to this looking good, the latter being 3 from 3.

James Doyle, who has had a relatively quiet week by his high standards, is on Dubawi Legend who was 2nd in last years Dewhurst at Newmarket but has disappointing since. If he can get back to that sort of form he could be competitive here. Henry DeBromhead sends over Star Girls Aalmal who finished 4th in the Irish 1000 Guineas so has to be respected along with the unbeaten Monaadah with the experienced Jim Crowley in the pilots seat

Heading the market though I like Noble Truth for the Buick/Appleby partnership and we could well see a good day (again) for the Godolphin team. The yard won this last year and providing there isn't any real heavy showers to soften it up, I think he will take all the beating here.

3.40pm

The Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes is up next and this looks all about the Hurricane for those famous Blue Godolphin colours again. Hurricane Lane won the Irish Derby and the St Leger last season and went close in the Arc so is a justifiable favourite here. Broome looks the obvious danger and Third Realm could come in to play if there is a bit of rain through the day.

4.20pm

This is a wide open looking group 1 with 27 runners due to go post for what is likely to be a fast and furious 6f sprint. Home Affairs heads the betting but I can't bring myself to go with a horse at less than 2/1 in such a big field! He could well be the class act and the Aussie runner has a top jockey doing the steering with James McDonald onboard. Another Aussie runner could also be an interesting runner in Artorius but I'm not sure the low draw will be helpful, I suspect middle to high could have a slight advantage.

Sacred drops back to 6f for this but is from a top yard (Haggas) as is Creative Force (Appleby) and representing the US we have Campanelle for Wesley Ward. There are extra places on offer with a number of firms for this so I'm going to go for 2 big priced each way punts, the first being Glen Shiel. Hollie Doyle will be onboard and the 8YO was 2nd in this last year and if the rain comes, the 66/1 could be a huge each way price. The other I am going to take a risk on is Dragon Symbol. He's been a bit disappointing this year but showed some promise last year in a couple of G1s and if he's in the mood he could have a place chance at a big price.

5.00pm

Another big field here with 28 runners due to line up for the Wokingham and we have a number of the big sprinters in action here. There are plenty of familiar names here with Rohaan, Popmaster, Jumby, Mr Waygu and Bielsa to name just a few, the latter being of interest under what I think could be a good draw out in stall 30. The Owners Group are represented here too with First Folio so good look to all connections, I think he's got an e/w chance and I know he'd be a popular winner.

Blackrod looks to have a good chance here and has been very consistent although does have a 5lb rise to contend with, this might not be enough to stop him though. Fresh went close in this last year so is likely to give another good account and Silver Samurai comes in this looking to complete a hatrick and could give a bold showing.

But the vote here goes to a bit of a favourite of mine in Summerghand. He was 2nd in this back in 2020 and the 8YO could be on a handy mark. Top jockey James Doyle is in the saddle & I'm hoping he can roll back the years on the old warrior and give another big run here at a big price. He looks worth a cheeky each way punt at around 20/1 with plenty of places on offer

5.35pm

My Nap goes in this one and you can find more on that here but for those looking for a bigger price alternative Trojan Horse looks an interesting one dropping back in trip. He's about 50/1 so could be a good, each way punt

6.10pm

We close a great week of racing with the Queen Alexandra Stakes for the stayers and, at time of writing, Trueshan heads the betting but he could well get pulled if the rain doesn't come. If it does soften up a bit and he runs, then he takes all the beating. Wordsworth looks the chief danger for Aidan O'Brien providing he stays this 2m5f trip but Falcon Eight looks a more proven stayer and can go well for the Dermot Weld yard.

As an each way punt though to round off the day I'm going to with last years winner Stratum. The wily Willie Mullins knows a thing or two about stayers and if he can repeat even close to last years run, he should be up there for the place money
