#OddsKnows Racing Preview: 7th May

Updated: May 7, 2022

As usual we have our weekend preview for you with the action this week coming from Haydock, Ascot, Lingfield & Nottingham for the flat season plus supporting action over the jumps from Hexham. We then have the evening action at Thirsk (flat) and Warwick (jumps)

Our man #OddsKnows once again takes a look at the best of all the action here for you on The Cheeky Punts and don't forget to check out the #OddsKnows Nap which you can find here as well as all the latest from our days picks on our racing pages

We start today though with the action from Ascot where in the opener we have a very open looking race with 6 places on offer from Skybet so it may be worth an each way play to kick us off. The lightly race Duke of Verona looks an interesting one and he shaped well in his last 2 runs however these were on the all weather (at Wolverhampton) There may still be more to come though so he could be worth an each way punt.

Another I like here is Diamond Bay who has last weekends man of the moment James Doyle onboard. He looked very much on the up until a very disappointing run last time out when only 8th but again this was on the AW. The booking of Doyle for today though could be telling and at around 16/1 he looks a decent cheeky each way punt

On to the 2.55pm and I am going to take on a few of the favourites today starting with Redemption Time. He has had a run out already finishing 3rd at Newbury so that race course experience could hold the key, the favourite is the Godolphin newcomer Noble Style and he looks to certainly have the pedigree we've come to expect from the famous blue silks. I think he may be worth taking on though and the better value looks to be in our charge.

The 3.30pm looks a lot more open but we have another Godolphin one here who is likely to be a danger in the shape of Soft Whisper but I am going to side with Strawberri for Roger Varian. He was pretty consistent last season and his 2 wins both came over a mile (todays trip). I would have liked a touch more rain as its now looking like it may be good or possibly even good to firm today down at Ascot but any summer showers would certainly help our boy here.

And then in the 4.40pm After The Rain is another Godolphin favourite but again I'm going to take them on, this time with Tregony. She looked a pretty smart 3YO last season and had a run at Windsor a few weeks ago, finishing 4th without having the best of luck in running. With that run under her belt she should come in to this one fit and firing so I think we can push the fav all the way here at a more respectable 10/3

The big handicap of the day sees 28 runners going to post for the Victoria Cup and Skybet go a huge 8 places on this one. It looks very difficult to call but I think the pace may come from the higher stalls and it should be a strong one. And that should work out nicely for my first selection here which is Fresh. He has experience of this type of race here at Ascot having finished 1st and then 2nd in 2 big field races last summer although he's another who may benefit from a touch of rain today.

At slightly bigger prices Popmaster looks to be on a good mark now and has young Saffie Osborne onboard claiming a further 3lb, the main concern would be the step up to 7f today although the breeding suggests this shouldn't be a huge issue. If the pace does come as expected on the high side he could well be up there for the extra place spots.

And at a much bigger price and as a bit more of a speculative punt, Gioia Cieca could out run his odds and be in with a chance of a place. He should be suited to this 7f trip here and a real good pace, particularly if it does dry out more through the day as well

Over at Haydock next and I'm going for the each way plays here today on what looks like it could be quite a competitive days racing. And kicking us off I am going with Baroque Star in the 1.20pm who makes her handicap debut. Despite still being a maiden after 3 runs I like the look of this Mick Channon 3YO here and this filly out of Lope De Vega should be suited to the step up to a mile and half here which hopefully unlocks a bit of potential. At around 11/1 with 4 places on offer, she looks to have a good each way chance.

In the 2.25pm its a horse I really like from the David Pipe yard in Neon Moon. He comes here looking to seal a hatrick of wins and whilst the step up in trip shouldn't pose a great issue, the 14/1 with 6 places on offer looks good each way value. At the head of market here is another one I like though, and was a previous winning nap for us in the shape of Party Business so I'll also be having a small play on him today.

On to the 3pm and a good looking handicap hurdle where we have a couple of the big guns from the season battling it out again. Milkwood won the Scottish Champion Hurdle last spring and then Anna Bunina won this years with West Cork back in 2nd. All 3 look to have strong chances again here but I am going to with Cormier who was 2nd in this race last year and I think he's got an each way chance here to be in the mix again. With 6 places on offer it looks worth an each way punt

And making up the last of the double priced punts for today is Global Esteem in the 4.45pm. This is one I had in my tacker after a couple of really good runs back in 2021 but that form of late hasn't been great. Those last 2 runs came on the AW though so the switch back to turf here should help (he is 0-8 on the AW!) He could actually be on a very handy mark here and with those extra places on offer again here, I'll take the each way play
