#OddsKnows Racing Preview: 5th Mar

Updated: Mar 5, 2022

As usual we have our weekend preview for you with the action this week coming from Kelso, Doncaster and Newbury. We've also got all weather racing from Lingfield and the evening meet under the lights is now at Southwell. Our man #OddsKnows once again takes a look at the best of all the action here for you on The Cheeky Punts.

Don't forget to check out the #OddsKnows Nap which you can find here as well (from 9am Saturday) as well as all the latest from our days picks on our racing pages

write ups will be updated by 10am Saturday

Newbury

So first up today it the action from Newbury and Skybet kick us off with the money back race on the Veterans Handicap Chase at 1.15pm. Aso would have been favourite I suspect but has been pulled out Saturday morning which leaves Kauto Riko as the new fav. With the money back offer though I am going to side with the 2nd fav here Indy Five. The 12YO looked to be going well when finishing 2nd LTO and today the talented Stand Sheppard takes the mount. At around 10/3 he looks worth a small punt

In the 1.50pm I am sticking with Farinet who I don't think was suited to the 3m LTO so this drop back here looks more to his liking and the soft ground should also suit. My own thoughts on the Williams and Deutsch double act have been well documented this season but this looks another good chance for the pair to take a nice Saturday win

The 3.02pm has seen quite a bit of support for my selection here which is Black Poppy and he's now as short as 6/4 at time of writing. Lord Baddesley looks the main danger but has really drifted overnight and our charge was well supported on previous winning runs so the markets clearly fancy a repeat of that today, as a bit of an alternative if you prefer (like me) the bigger prices then I would have a quick mention for Wild Max from The Owners Group. He is trained by the maestro Paul Nicholls and the yard is finding a bit of form after a relative lean spell by their own high standards. At around 7/1 he could be a lively contender

In the 3.37pm we have a pretty competitive looking race but the one I am drawn to is the current favourite Dorking Boy. He is pretty consistent having won at Taunton and then finishing a good 2nd (to Thunder Rock) last time out. A repeat of that kind of run should see trainer Tom Lacey go close again here with our boy at around 7/2

Kelso

Kelso next up and in the 1.32pm I am going to go against Richmond Lake who is likely to go off favourite and the one I think is the value here is Sholokjack from the Skelton yard. He is 2 from 2 over hurdles and won both a touch cosily, there certainly looks more to come and could well follow the My Drogo route of taking this one then going on to Grade 1 success. Priced around 11/2 I will have a bit of that for today.

The 2.05pm and its one in the colours of the late, great Trevor Hemmings that looks the obvious choice here. Famous Bridge hit the front last time out before unseating the Champ Brian Hughes but he looked the winner until that mistake. This looks a good chance to make amends for that and he can take this one today at a relatively short price of around 5/2

The last of my picks from Kelso comes in the 3.15pm although I would have preferred a bit more rain for Metier. It looks like it has been drying a bit with the going currently officially called as Soft but he still looks the one to beat. He does hold a couple of festival entries but may have targeted this as a more realistic opportunity to score a decent win and he should certainly go close. Balko Saint has been well supported too so is worth a mention and could prove a danger to our charge

Doncaster

On to Doncaster and the 3.30pm for the Grimthorpe and there are a few in here with a chance. Cloth Cap hasn't really fired yet this season but showed glimmers of hope in a few of those runs and Le Milos has been on a good run this season coming in to this on a hat-trick bid. The one I am siding with here though is Undersupervision from the Twiston-Davies yard. He looked a fairly decent prospect last year but was some way behind Le Milos at Sandown last month so on the bare form he does have a bit to find. This longer trip should suit our charge more and he does look to be improving over the bigger fences with each run. He looks worth a chance here at around 13/2

For the 4.05pm I am going with Sultans Pride under the very talented Theo GIllard. Our charge has a good record here having won on his last 3 visits to sunny donny and he looks set for another big run here. The trip and conditions shouldn't worry him so I'd be happy to be on him at around the 11/4 on offer

The Each Way plays

We had a good couple of each way plays last week as we landed the place double a big prices so hopefully this week we can go close again. And the first of these picks is in the 2.40pm at Kelso. Sandy Thomsons charge has had a couple of place efforts but this does look much tougher with just the 2 places on offer.

And in the 3.15pm Voix Du Reve looks potentially well in at the weights and has come in for a bit of support early on Saturday, Skybet go 5 places on this one so there could be a bit of each way value here in a pretty open looking race

Lingfield (all weather)

Just a few today from Lingfield from me and our spotlight race today is also on the all weather, you can check that out here

Good Luck whatever you are backing and don't forget you can follow
