#OddsKnows Racing Preview: 20th Aug

Updated: Aug 20, 2022

As usual we have our weekend preview with the action this week coming from York, Sandown and Chester plus a summer jumps card from Newton Abbott. The evening meetings come from Lingfield and Chelmsford on the all weather under the Saturday night twilight

Our man #OddsKnows takes a look at the best of all the action for day here for you on The Cheeky Punts plus don't forget to check out the #OddsKnows Nap which you can find here as well as all the latest across all our racing pages today

We start with the Money Back race on Skybet and so far from the 3 days at York this week we've had one winner (at 5/1) and our money back twice so we haven't 'lost' yet. Today though I'm taking a bit more of a risk as Finest Sound is a big 14/1 for the opener at 1.50pm as I look to take on the short priced fav in Mighty Ulysses. I do actually think he looks a solid favourite so I wouldn't be put off putting him a multiple bet but with the money back on offer for 2nd and 3rd the value to me could be elsewhere. The selection was 2nd in a Group 1 over in Meydan over 1m1f and I'm hoping that can be a bit of a positive in the hope there are question marks over the principles getting that extra furlong (having mainly been running at a mile) Bashkirova is another I like and the smart Cheveley filly is better than her last result suggests (5th of 7 at Royal Ascot when going off favourite) so could well bounce back here

For the Melrose at 2.25pm and I think this could be another one where the Goldolpin 3YOs could be strong. The pick looks like Wild Crusade with Will Buick onboard and the form got a bit of a boost as the horse he had in 2nd LTO (another Godolphin runner) has since gone in at Goodwood so he should be up there. Al Nafir is the '2nd string' but can't be discounted with Frankie onboard although there may be some question marks if he will get the 1m6f today as he's never been past 1m2f. Soulcombe represents the dangerous Haggas yard with Hollie in the saddle and has a live chance but my second choice here is a bigger priced selection with Aimeric. He's from another strong yard (trainer Roger Varian) and there could be more to come from this Frankel colt.

The Ebor looks wide open but I've whittled this down to 3 selections I think could go well especially with the extra places on offer. Gaassee has won 4 from 6 and he looks like he should stay the 1m6f having won here at York back in May over a mile and half but there was enough that day to suggest the extra 2f wont be an issue. At a bigger price Valley Forge won the Melrose last year but does run from out of the weights but he could have a good each way chance and another who is generally consistent so could be an each way punt is John Leeper. Get Shirty is also worth a mention at around 16/1 and is having a very productive season with 4 wins and second from 5 races in 2022.

Sticking with York though for now and my best of the rest and in the 3pm Sandrine looks to have a good chance to follow up what I thought was a smart win in the Lennox LTO at Goodwood when he a couple of these in behind him. Sacred could shape better than showed in that race so rates an obvious danger and we've also got the really likeable sorts in Jumby and Rohaan here too in a cracking looking race

At slightly bigger prices Saleymm won here over 7f back at the start of the July and is likely to be bang up with the pace again so dropping down to 6f could be a positive if he goes forward. At around 12/1 and with 6 places on offer, he could be a bit of each way value.

And in the 4.45pm the favourite looks pretty strong in Rocket Rodney but I think Bolt Action could go well at a decent price dropping back down to 5f. The Varian yard is in decent nick of late and I think he could have another here that looks worth a cheeky each way punt

Away from York the supporting action comes from Sandown and Chester so I've gone from one from each with Migdam my selection of the day at Sandown and Titan Rock the pick for Chester. Migdam ran well when finishing 3rd at Goodwood and he was behind two smart Godolphin horses that day so there is no disgrace in that run and with the in form Richard Kingscote onboard, he should be there or thereabouts.

And at Chester Titan Rock has slid down the weights of late and looked a bit sharper LTO at Goodwood and did have a good 2nd here last year to Fools Rush In who opposes today. He's got a good draw here though and has come in for a bit of market support so I think we could see a big run from him
