#OddsKnows Racing Preview: 19th Feb

Updated: Feb 19, 2022

As usual we have our weekend preview for you with the action this week coming from Ascot, Haydock and Wincanton. We've also got all weather racing from Lingfield and the evening meet under the lights comes from Newcastle. Our man #OddsKnows once again takes a look at the best of all the action here for you on The Cheeky Punts.

Don't forget to check out the #OddsKnows Nap which you can find here as well (from 9am Saturday) as well as all the latest from our days picks on our racing pages

Ascot

First up we start at Ascot and its the money back race on Skybet, a bit of a favourite of mine as we can often find a bit of value in these races. And today looks no exception, the one I did like the look of for this was Ask Me Early but there was always a chance he wouldn't go in this one so my attention is drawn to Fortescue at a nice looking 10/1. He looks to have plenty in the tank having won over 3m and was a respectable 3rd in the Peter Marsh a few weeks ago at Haydock over 3m1f. If he can outstay these he could have a chance althorugh the favourite, Fiddlerontheroof, could go well under top weight. At 10/1 though our boy is worth a shot and I'll play the win for the money back and a possible cover on a e/w bet too

Up before that in the 1.50pm we have a really competitive looking chase with it looking easy to make a case for a number of these but the one I am going to side with is Doyen Breed. He was a runner up in a grade 2 over 3m last month at Warwick behind the well fancied Threeunderthrufive and that looks to have him well matched with Does He Know. Another with a chance here could be Corach Rambler dropping back in trip as well but I'm hoping the forecast soft going and possibly quite a weak pace play in to our charges hands

My next 2 selections both come from the Paul Nicholls yard and those who followed last week may remember that the form of the maestro had been a bit of a concern , the yard not really firing at the levels we have come to expect from them. Today I think we may see that start to change and in the 3pm I fancy Cap Du Mathan to get the team back to the winners circle. With Harry Cobden onboard for this one this pretty unexposed 7YO came back from a lengthy layoff to win last month and I think he can follow that up here again. The ground and conditions shouldn't prove an issue and I'm happy to take on a solid looking favourite in Good Risk At All here.

And last up from Ascot from me its the 3.38pm and another Nicholls/Cobden combo in the shape of Saint Calvados. He was 3rd on his first run for Nicholls in the King George and looked to be travelling well until fading a touch. That was over 3m that day so the drop to 2m5f here looks a wise move and I expect him to still be held up here, there are however a number of dangers in the race so this looks another competitive affair. A nice Nicholls double though would surely silence some of the recent critics and you can never write off the maestro!

Haydock

Off to Haydock next and I was holding off looking at these as the weather round this way has been awful the last 24 hours or so. The going is officially heavy but the team there have done a great job to make sure racing goes ahead, the conditions though may play their part through the day. In the 1.30pm though we have a big odds on shot in Porticello and even with the crazy weather it would be a shock if he got beat here so I'm looking again at the betting w/o market which has returned a few decent wins for us of late. And in this one I am going for Collingham for that deadly duo of Hughes and McCain. The conditions shouldn't bother him for this and I am hoping that actually works in his favour as he does have a bit to find with Skycutter having been 2 lengths behind him at Musselburgh back in November. It was good/soft that day so with it being heavy today, the 10/3 for the betting w/o the fav looks well worth a cheeky punt

At 2.05pm its a horse a really like in Molly Olly Wishes and she'll be the favourite for this one and she does have a pretty good strike rate over hurdles. The Skeltons have been a bit quieter of late but I expect her to be bang up there for this one and add some more prize money for the charity she represents.

At 2.40pm we have another pretty competitive looking grade 3 chase and a couple of the old warriors but I am going to stick with Secret Reprieve who was well supported for the Welsh Grand national but did come in to that possibly needing the run having been off nearly a full year. He could still be fairly well treated based on that run and this will be a right old slog, 3 & 1/2 miles over the heavy going. It should be a good watch and hopefully our boy can land this one for us.

And in the 3.15pm I am going with Small Present from the Sue Smith yard, this 7yo has been a pretty consistent sort and won here last time out over C&D. He still looked to have a bit in hand so I think we could see another good showing here with just a 4lb rise to contend with

Wincanton Over at Wincanton Max Dynamo looks the pick of the day for me, he is seeking a hattrick here and at the grand old age of 12 he looks to still be improving having bounced back to win here last time out.

In the 3.58pm I'm taking a speculative punt on Sizable Sam who seems to fair much better over hurdles. A good looking 3rd last time out and a few novices wins here last season mean he is no forlorn hope and he should certainly be competitive in this one

And in the last I quite like the look of Braganza Bay who comes in to this looking primed and ready for a big win. He steps up in trip here and that looks like it should suit now he goes handicapping

The Each Way plays

At the bigger prices I have a few I like the look of today with a Fairly Famous (1.38W) and The Galloping Bear (2.40H) looking to have good each way chances at a decent price. And for the bigger priced players, I'm going to have a small cheeky punt on Houi Cherie at Ascot

Lingfield (all weather)

On the all weather for the day and its from Lingfield and first up at 2pm I'm going to take a chance on Wirraway. On a pretty poor looking day Celtic Art in the 3.45pm looks worth a play and I also like Whittle Le Woods in the 4.20pm.
